4th of July at the Beach

We headed to the beach last Wednesday for a looooong weekend with family.  My parents were down, as were my brother and his family and Tricia and Tommy came down too! We had a FULL house, but we also had a LOT of fun!

After a workout Wednesday morning, I loaded the car with the boys and Hank (Eddie came later with his car and Bruce).  As we got close, Hank was too excited to sit on the floor.  He climbed on Andy's lap for a better view!

Dad greeted us on the golf cart where Hank immediately went for a ride.  That is one happy pup right there!

The cousins were already down and it didn't take long for everyone to jump right in playing together.  Cal LOVED driving Margaret around in the F150.  He needed to "check some stuff under the hood" before carrying on....

Andy and Catherine have the best time together. They talk and talk and talk and have so much fun! I love watching (and listening to!) them interact together. I hope they remain close like they are now.

There was a little spot up in the side yard that was set up as Camp NW (not after Kim K's baby....).  The boys had so much fun riding the cars up there and then hiding in the teepees and tents.

Cal has started doing this new face every time he takes a group picture.  It is so 100% an Eddie face that it kind of blows my mind.   Everyone has said from the get go that Cal is Eddie's twin-- and I haven't really been able to see it.  I just kind of nod and smile. But when he does this stuff, it's like I am staring at Eddie...!!!
Jackson and Andy don't even know what to do with him.  hahahaha

Andy thinks Uncle Chris is fantastic.  He loooooves to talk to him...often nonstop.  If Uncle Chris was on the golf cart, Andy was sprinting to meet him there.  They spent a LOT of time together on the golf cart this weekend!

Wednesday night, after the kids were in bed, my mom and I took Henry (her dog) and Bruce on a walk (Hank doesn't need to get energy out, so he stays home and enjoys the AC).  We saw a dog we know well and he came over to say hi.  Well, it didn't go well and he ended up attacking Bruce.  I can honestly say I have never been so scared.  He clamped down on the back of B's neck and we could not get him off.  The owner of the other dog, who I know and like, was there and together we were doing everything we could to separate them.  It seemed like it lasted for hours, but it was probably only 3 minutes.  We were screaming. Neighbors came out.  It was AWFUL.  It was worse than awful.  I had the other dog by his hind quarters and was pulling as hard has I could.  The other owner was popping him on his head as I stepped on his foot.  He finally released a little to rebite down and I pulled him back.  He didn't have a collar on, so I grabbed the back of his neck with one hand and the back of him with the other hand. He twisted out of my grasp all together and went running after Bruce (who was then running with the lady down the street) and he attacked again.  After MUCH screaming and yelling and pulling, we finally got the other dog into his house. We were shaken to say the least.

In the dark, all I could see was a pretty good puncture wound on the top of B's head.   We collected ourselves and shakily walked home.  Bruce was no worse for the wear, and was still wearing his dopey grin.  When we got back to the house, I saw Eddie and burst into tears.  It was so awful.

We cleaned the top of the head wound and kept a close eye on Bruce that night and Thursday.  The cut started pussing pretty good (I took lots of pictures, but I will spare the blog....) and we also found a few other wounds that were pretty significant.  The owner of the dog felt TERRIBLE and tried to take him to the vet to get checked out, but, because it was a holiday weekend, no vets were taking walk in patients down there.  So he called his vet, sent a pic of the pussing top part and she called in a prescription for an antibiotic.

This is the longest story ever.  After bathing him on Sunday, we determined there was some pretty good swelling and we needed to take him to the vet.  He received 4 stitches and a drain to relieve the swelling that was happening.  Sheesh! Bless his heart!! It was AWFUL (can I say that a few more times?!?!)

So, THURSDAY morning we had beautiful weather...! Eddie wanted to go kite boarding (anyone shocked there?) so I helped him launch out in the sound.  Mom and I took the boys via kayak out to watch him/help him for a bit.  It was a gorgeous day!

I so enjoyed bonding with this little one over the long weekend.  Margaret is very much a two year old, and I loved trying to reign in her sass! She was saying RooRoo by the end of the weekend and I was one proud aunt! (the kids call me aunt rooroo... :) )

That night, Bruce was acting pretty out of it (now we realize that he had more damage done to him than we realized), so we let him sleep out of his crate and on our floor.  He stayed by my side of the bed the whole night.  Sweet boy...

These three had breakfast all in a row every morning.  And they were up EARLY every day! Holy cow! They were suuuuper excited to start their days!

Friday morning, Tricia and Tommy drove in early and we packed up the boat and headed out! Cal helped grandpa drive the boat...

And we all cracked our first beer at 10:24! Don't judge.  Or do.  I don't really care.  It was another beautiful day and we were happy people!

We went to a few islands and dropped anchor while we played around.  Well, CalBoy was running by the boat and tripped on the anchor line and landed on his knee on the anchor.  It opened up nicely-- fairly deep cut....! Thankfully, my sister in law's sister (does that make sense?) is a PA and she looked at his knee and said we could totally go get stitches or she could glue it back together.  So that's what we did.  She went and got some super glue and glued his knee back together... seriously.  #ifitaintthedogitstheboy

That night, my mom had arranged for a photographer to come and take family pictures.  She ordered matching outfits for the kids and we all were to be ready by 6.  Well, the storm clouds were forming, so we hustled to get ready-- I had my crew out there at 5:55 and she snapped a few pictures (this one if from my phone, from behind the photog).... (Cal can't bend his leg because of the hurt knee...so we had to be creative in the pictures to keep that leg straight)...

And then the skies opened up and it poured.  And the wind was blowing, so it was sideways pouring.  We all took time to do our hair and put ourselves together and by 6:03, we were all a sopping wet, hot mess.  I felt a little like a wet dog.  Oddly enough, we got the pictures back from the lady and she got some great ones! I will post some later... we were pleasantly surprised.  We literally thought we would have zero pictures.

We came back to the house and I tried to get one of my boys while she took pictures of the other family and I asked them to stand by the pole.  Nug struck a pose...
The photographer left and within 20 minutes, the clouds broke and the sun came out and it was a beautiful night. #gofigure.  And also, that was the only rain we saw the entire time we were at the beach-- ha! All my mom wanted was a picture of her grandkids on the beach in these adorable outfits.  Maybe next time...?

The next day, Saturday, was the 4th of July!!! Woohoo! We decided to head over to the beach (notice I said the BEACH...not the OCEAN...we aren't playing with sharks...), and we had a great morning over there.

Cal and Grandma built a pretty fabulous sand castle-- Cal was impressed with his work.

And then we buried Cal in the sand.

Tricia and her fair skin can't handle the sun.  She got a little fried the day before so they set up shop under the umbrella.

These two were allowed to go in the water to the bottom of their bathing suits.  They wanted to go further and I wasn't having it...

After some beach time, we headed over to a friend's house who has a pool. They challenged us to a volleyball game.  We had some good swim time first.  Grandpa was cracking Andy up...

Two of the boys who were there are avid fishermen.  They were teaching Cal and Andy how to catch shrimp and then use that shrimp to bait a hook and catch bigger fish.  It was soooo neat to watch them teaching.

Cal was enamored with the older kids-- and they were SO sweet with him.  They helped him hold this shrimp for a picture....hahaha

A shot of the volleyball game.  I stood over by the water watching the boys "fish" so I got this from afar.

All three boys cousins on the 4th of July!

Cal and Jackson-- best buddies!

We got home that night and everyone was exhausted.  Andy had been a terrible sleeper the whole week (shocker, I know).  There is a crib in his room from when he was a baby.  He demanded that night to sleep in the crib.  Okay, fine.  There comes a point when I am just not picking battles.  You want to sleep in a crib as a 4 year old? Fine! So he climbed right on in there and that little punk slept through the damn night.  I am ready to go find the crib here and make him sleep in it!

Everyone headed home on Sunday, but we decided to drive home Monday morning instead and we had the MOST fun day ever on Sunday! We cleaned up around the house a bunch and did some of the chores we had to do, and then we loaded the boat and headed down to an island in Swansboro-- about a 45 minute boat ride.  It was a GORGEOUS day and the water was beautiful.  It looked like the Carribbean, I swear.

CalBoy put this hat on his head and he looked so stinkin cute with his shaggy hair hanging out the side of his hat.

We tied the boys' boogy boards up to the boat and the boys had a blast riding them while I hauled the rope in.  The current was pretty strong so we had to stay close to boat.

Someone spotted a little crab scurrying along the beach and the boys were SO excited about it! They caught him and then Eddie helped them get a better look at it.
Here's a look at our little set up... it was heavenly!

Andy played so hard the whole time-- both boys did, but I am not sure I ever saw Andy stop moving the entire day.

Cal assumed his spot at the helm to help Grandpa drive us home.  Check out that bright blue sky!

When we got home, I bathed the boys and then Andy decided to rest in Grandma and Grandpa's bed.  It was 5:00 and he fell asleep HARD.  Henry joined him on the bed.

I planned on waking him up for dinner.   Mom said, "oh, let him sleep!" So we ate dinner.  I was going to wake him up for the s'mores I made for dessert.  Dad said, "he is sleeping!" so we let him sleep.

Next thing I knew, it was time for bed...and Andy was still snoozing in mom and dad's bed.  They told me to leave him in there and not wake him up.  So I did (who am I to argue?!).
And that kid slept straight through the night.   From 5pm to 6am.  All night long.

I think the long weekend wore him out!!!

This loooong post wore ME out! ha!

It was a great weekend at the beach.  We drove home Monday and took B to the vet for his stitches and did some big time unpacking and cleaning.  It feels good to be home!
